A new large-scale globally distributed databse: Google Spanner

0

Google announced a few months ago the release of a database that goes beyond the current NoSQL storage systems. A couple of days ago we had news that they actually made it!

They reported to have created Spanner, a database that stretches across the globe while behaving as if it’s all in one place. So something that it is at the same time distributed and consistent. Is that bloody thing even possible? It is like having a one character of Game of Thrones dismembered and scattered in all the seven kingdoms, but anybody looking sees him whole and alive. Google claim they made it, so the rest of the nonbelievers should probably be faithful.

Hi. As you probably know if you come from my homepage, I work on the Semantic Web field. That means that most of the world do not really understand a thing of what you are really doing. One of the objectives of this blog is precisely trying to explain in simple words what the hell semantics are.

To give you an example, my homepage, dully as it seems to be, is full of semantics. It is not only understandable by you, but also by programmes, or so I hope. To do that I inserted my FOAF (Friend-of-a-friend) profile in a micro-format (RDFa) that can be read by machines. So, a machine will be able to spam me, or send silly Skype messages to me just using the information I freely and gladly gave. Really studid, isn’t it? Probably, but i can get benefits from that. I can be linked to other friends, or indexed by Google easily (Google uses RDFa, believe it or not).

Anyway, this is just an example of what I’ll probably suffer in the near future. So, instead of spamming me, if you are a machine please be gentle. I’ll appreciate it.
